Is your plywood furniture releasing toxic chemicals? Find out how formaldehyde emissions can affect your indoor air quality and make your children sick.
Is Your Furniture Secretly Poisoning Your Home?
A home should be beautiful, but more importantly, it should be safe, especially for your children.
Have you ever thought that the furniture on which your child plays or you relax can be harmful to your health? In fact, chemicals used in most plywood furniture can pollute the indoor air and become the root cause of many health problems.
Formaldehyde, a commonly used chemical in plywood adhesives, is known to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that affect indoor air quality. Formaldehyde in plywood is usually used to join layers, but it slowly dissolves in the air, which we call plywood emissions. It is a type of VOC that harms indoor air quality.
This in plywood is a danger that is not visible, but is there.
Formaldehyde is a chemical commonly used as a resin to hold the layers of plywood together. It was thought to be essential for bonding, but problems arise when it is slowly released into the air; this is called plywood emissions.
Short-term effects: eye irritation, headache, sore throat
Long-term exposure: respiratory problems such as asthma, and in some cases, cancer
It is even more dangerous for children and the elderly.
Not all plywood is the same. If you are looking for safe plywood for interiors for your kids’ room or your living space, it is important to understand E0 and E1 grades.
E0 plywood is the one that has the lowest amount of formaldehyde emissions (≤0.5 mg/L), and is considered the safest for indoor use. E1 plywood allows slightly higher amounts (0.5–1.5 mg/L), but this is also the accepted standard in many countries.
The problem arises when people buy cheap and unbranded plywood, which does not meet these standards. So always make sure that the plywood has a third-party certification such as CARB, FSC, or BSI. These certifications ensure that your furniture is not only beautiful but also safe.
Today's urban homes lack natural ventilation. We spend most of our time in closed rooms, ACs and air-tight windows. In such a situation, the VOCs that accumulate in indoor air have an effect quickly. Small children, the elderly and people suffering from asthma are the first to fall prey to it.
Just buying aesthetic furniture is not enough. When it comes to indoor air quality and family health, it becomes important to be conscious about furniture safety.
Whenever you make or buy furniture, make sure that the plywood used in it meets the following standards:
